Overview

This lovely Grenache/Mourvèdre blend mixes wild plums and strawberry fruit with rocky notes, dried herbs, and smoky-gamey notes that offer a come-hither character.
Tasting notes
In 2013, there’s enough Grenache in the blend (78%) to put the variety on the label, and Ryan does so, blending that Grenache (from Upland and Angiolina) with 22% Mourvedre from StoneTree Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope. The nose mixes plum and strawberry fruit with rocky notes, dried herbs, and smoky-gamey Mourvedre subtleties. The palate clocks in at 14% listed alcohol and is immediately noticeable for its velvety texture. True to the warmer vintage, this is a generous charmer, offering plenty of friendly come-hither character. I was especially seduced by the salty-mineral piquancy on the finish, which seemed to invite the next sip or the next bite of ribs smoked on the grill. This has also seen a production drop, down to 207 cases (versus 276 last year), and this is also unlikely to be around for long.

Production notes
All blocks were hand harvested and whole cluster fermented at 30% and the remainder was destemmed into open-top 1.5-ton fermenters. A series of pump-overs (circulating the juice throughout the fermentation process) and/or punch-downs (mixing the skins with the juice) were done 2-3 times per day for approximately 12 days with a delestage done at peak fermen- tation (12-15 brix) to ensure full extraction. Then lightly pressed and put to barrel on lees for malolactic fermentation, stirring every two weeks to enhance mouthfeel. 2013 was a toasty one so we were more gentle in the fermentation process to keep the wine focused and pure.

We are so proud to offer our third vintage of Majestic to our fans. In years past, I’ve added a little Syrah to the blend, but not this year! I totally fell in love with the Grenache-Mourvedre blend. Grenache hails from Angiolina Farms (55% Yakima Valley), Upland Vineyard (23% Snipes Mountain) and Stone Tree Vineyard (22% Wahluke Slope). They are all very distinct sites that add complexity with classic Rhone-style juice.
